“When walking through the checkout workflow near the end you are bombarded with multiple offers for other products(kind of like the impulse buy before checkout in a physical store). When adding the impulse to your cart you are taken directly to the finalized sale and not to your cart for verification of quantity. In my case I wanted to try an additional product but had a quantity of 3 added and charged to my credit card. The other dark pattern is that they say you get free shipping in the emails and on the page but then you learn that to get said shipping you have to sign up and pay for VIP to get free shipping.”

Nexgen Global LLC was reported to the Deceptive Design Tip Line over its checkout process. According to the report, near the end of the checkout workflow the customer is bombarded with multiple offers for other products, comparable to the impulse-buy display before checkout in a physical store, and adding such an item takes the customer straight to a finalised sale rather than back to the cart to verify quantity — in the reporter’s case this resulted in a quantity of three being charged when only one was wanted. The report adds that, although emails and the page state that shipping is free, the customer then learns that free shipping requires signing up and paying for VIP membership.
